  • A shed or shipping container. Metal, unventilated, in the sun.
  • Against an exterior wall that catches afternoon sun.
  • Near a water heater or any heat-producing appliance.
  • In direct sunlight through a window, even indoors.

Where to store it

  • An interior room, away from exterior walls where possible
  • Off the floor, which helps with both damp and flooding
  • Away from windows and direct sun
  • Somewhere ventilated rather than sealed
  • The coolest part of the house usually an interior cupboard rather than an outbuilding

Storing for a year or more. Check it more often, not less every two to three months without exception. The longer it sits, the more likely self-discharge has taken it somewhere you don’t want.

Moving house or shipping it. Lithium batteries have transport rules. If you’re flying, they can’t go in checked baggage and large capacities generally can’t be carried at all. Road transport is fine. Check current airline rules before you plan anything.

After heavy use. Let it cool to room temperature before putting it away. A warm unit going straight into a closed cupboard holds that heat for hours.

After a storm. If it’s been through flooding, damp or unusual conditions, inspect it properly before storing rather than putting the problem away for nine months.

What damage actually looks like

Signs worth acting on rather than ignoring:

  • Swelling or deformation of the casing
  • Unusual smell, particularly anything chemical or burning
  • Won’t hold charge — drops significantly faster than it used to
  • Runtime much shorter than the same load gave you last year
  • Corrosion at ports or connectors
